The text chat feature of Discord is great for between-game communications. Both VTTs have helpful communities so reach out if you have questions. So if there is a feature that you think would be helpful, a little research may pay off. Roll20 is less robust, but even then there are a lot of great things you can do with macros. With Fantasy Grounds, every time I thought "I wish the system could do X" I later found out it DID do x, I just didn't know how. There are many features on the VTTs that might not be obvious. As long as you can get people into your game rolling dice and moving tokens on the map you can run a game. Don't set out to master all the bells and whistles on the VTT at the outset. It tends to get better as the group gets more familiar just be prepared for it and don't let it throw you. Without visual cues that someone is going to start/stop talking you end up with long silences where everyone is waiting for someone else to talk, then everyone starts speaking at once. Second, having a group on voice chat can be a bit more awkward than in-person play. Having nice maps and visual aids (e.g., pics of key NPCs) pays off more in an online game. First, it is more focused on maps because that is what everyone is staring at for most of the session. ![]() There are only a couple of differences that stand out to me. It is easy to add the MANY maps I have for the mega dungeon I'm running. There are other threads on EnWorld I've participated in recently where I've discussed various VTT platforms, but I'm getting close to settling on Fantasy Ground Unity. But it chokes on large maps with a lot of lines mapped out for line of sight and dynamic lighting. I like Roll20 as it is easy to get started with and players don't need to install anything. I've been spending a lot of time testing VTT platforms the past few weeks. I only use Teams with work and don't want to use it for personal activities. Microsoft Teams is also go and, I suppose Skype. It also ofters a great app for smart phones, which is a good backup if my wifi has issues, I can just switch to the app and my 3G network (I use Google Fi giving me choice of multiple service providers in most countries in the world). Few companies are able to provide the reach and power that Google can with datacenters all around the world. ![]() But I've had so many issues with Discord that I won't even try joining a game that uses it.įor voice and screen sharing I find Google Hangouts or Google Meet to provide the most consistent good quality no matter where I am in the world. Also, many of those running games on Roll20 use Discord for voice. Usually it is fine, even without great internet, but I wouldn't want to rely on it as a DM. I've also joined some pickup games on Roll20 with mixed results. Also, I'd like to use tokens for more tactical battle situations. But RealmWorks development has stopped and it was getting to be too much work to enter everything in RW. Basically it is just to show maps, progressively revealing them as the party explores. So what I've been doing is running my games with Google Hangouts, sharing the player view window to show maps. I've been using RealmWorks for years for building campaign worlds and running face-to-face games. I don't have great internet and I'm not sure all my players want to install software and learn new technology, so that colors my preferences. Because of work I no find myself overseas but have been able to keep my campaign going through on-line play. ![]() The series has also been successful in Russia, where presumably the themes are directly relevant to the audience. In a line graph, the data is shown as individual points on a grid a trend line connects all data points.Ī typical use of a line graph involves the mapping of temperature over time. Unlike circle graphs, line graphs are usually used to relate data over a period of time. If you look closely at the circle graph, you can see that the sections for food, childcare, and utilities take up almost exactly half of the circle-this means that these three items represent half the budget! This kind of analysis is harder to do with bar graphs because each item is represented as its own entity, and is not part of a larger whole.Ĭircle graphs often show the relationship of each piece to the whole using percentages, as in the next example. Rent and food are the greatest expenses here, with childcare also taking up a sizeable portion. This makes it easier to see where the greatest amounts of money are going, and how much of the whole budget these pieces take up. The circle graph below shows how each piece of the budget relates to the other pieces of the budget. The bar graph above focuses on the amount spent for each category. Using this data, you could figure out how much the family needs to earn every month to make this budget work. The bar graph shows the amounts of money spent on each item during one month. Each representation illustrates the information a little differently. It has been graphed two ways: first using a bar graph, and then using a circle graph. It is easy to see that students in this class had better study for the final exam!īecause circle graphs relate individual parts and a whole, they are often used for budgets and other financial purposes. This graph is useful because it relates each part-the final exam, the quizzes, the class project, and the class participation-to the whole. A class project will also be worth 20% and class participation will count for 10%.” In addition to telling the class this information, she could also create a circle graph. Circle graphs are often used to show how a whole set of data is broken down into individual components. In these types of graphs, individual pieces of data are represented as sections of the circle (or “pieces of the pie”). Sometimes you will see categorical data presented in a circle graph, or pie chart. However, the performance impact is generally minimal for small to moderate amounts of data, and the benefits of having a more readable format often outweigh the performance drawbacks. This can impact performance, especially when dealing with large amounts of data. Q: Are there any performance implications when using Base64 encoding/decoding?Ī: Encoding and decoding Base64 data has some overhead, as it increases the size of the data by approximately 33%. Q: Can I encode and decode non-string data using Base64?Ī: Yes, you can encode and decode other types of data, like ArrayBuffer or an array of numbers, by first converting them to a binary string and then using the appropriate encoding/decoding functions. It is mainly used for making binary data more readable and suitable for transmission over text-based protocols. Q: Is Base64 encoding secure for storing sensitive data?Ī: No, Base64 encoding is not a secure method for storing sensitive data, as it can be easily decoded. Instead, you can use the Buffer class as shown in the Node.js example above. Q: Can I use the btoa() and atob() functions in Node.js?Ī: No, these functions are not available in Node.js by default. log ( decodedString ) // codedamn is awesome! Encoding and Decoding Base64 in Node.js It is supported in modern browsers and can be used to encode strings as follows:įunction base64Encode ( input ) const base64Encoded = "Y29kZWRhbW4gaXMgYXdlc29tZSE=" const decodedString = base64Decode ( base64Encoded ) console. The btoa() function is a built-in JavaScript function that takes a binary string as an argument and returns its Base64-encoded equivalent. Encoding Base64 in JavaScript Using the btoa() Function This encoding scheme is widely used in various applications such as embedding images in HTML, XML, or JSON data, and transmitting binary data over text-based protocols like HTTP and SMTP. An additional character, "=", is used as a padding character when the binary data being encoded is not divisible by 3. These characters include uppercase letters (A-Z), lowercase letters (a-z), digits (0-9), and two special characters (+ and /). What is Base64 Encoding?īase64 encoding is a technique to convert binary data into ASCII text format, which consists of a set of 64 different characters (hence the name "Base64"). We will also briefly discuss how to perform these operations in Node.js using the Buffer class. In this blog post, we will explore how to encode and decode Base64 using JavaScript with various examples. This can be useful when you need to store binary data in a more readable format, such as when transmitting data over a network or when saving data in a database. Base64 encoding and decoding is an important aspect of web development, as it allows you to convert binary data into ASCII text format and vice versa. |
